Five small ways to bring calm to a stressful workday
You can't always change your workload, but you can change how the day feels. Five simple habits that take minutes, not hours.

Some days, work feels like a race you never signed up for. Messages arrive faster than you can answer them, meetings run into each other, and by evening you are exhausted but unsure what you actually finished.
You may not be able to change your workload overnight. But you can change how your day feels. Here are five small habits that take minutes, not hours.
1. Decide your one thing before you open your inbox
Before email and messages start pulling you in different directions, ask yourself: if I only finish one thing today, what should it be? Write it down. When the day gets busy, that note brings you back to what matters.
2. Breathe before you reply
When a stressful message arrives, the urge is to respond immediately. Instead, take three slow breaths, longer on the out-breath than the in-breath. It takes less than a minute, and it helps you answer from a calmer place.
3. Protect one block of focused time
Choose 45 to 60 minutes in your day for focused work. Close your inbox, silence notifications and work on your one thing. Even one protected block can make a day feel productive.
4. Take a real break
Scrolling your phone at your desk is not a break. Step away, even for five minutes. Walk, drink some water, look out of a window. Your mind needs a moment to reset before the next task.
5. Close the day on purpose
Before you finish, spend five minutes writing down what you completed and what comes next tomorrow. This helps your mind let go of work, so you can be present for the rest of your evening.
When small habits aren’t enough
These habits help with the everyday pressure. But if stress has become constant, or work is affecting your health and relationships, it may be time to look at the bigger picture: your boundaries, your role, or your next career step. That is where coaching can help.
